Top 3 Must-Try Japanese Chocolate Snacks – Alfort, Toppo, and DARS White

Living

When it comes to chocolate snacks, Japan has a wide variety of unique and delicious options. As someone who grew up enjoying Japanese sweets, I want to introduce you to three of my all-time favorite chocolate snacks. Each of these holds a special place in my heart—not just for the taste, but for the memories they bring back.

Toppo – The King of Chocolate Snacks (in my opinion)

Toppo is a classic Japanese chocolate snack: crispy pretzel sticks filled with smooth chocolate from the inside. What makes it special is the perfect balance of crunchy and creamy in every bite. Personally, I think Toppo is the king of all chocolate snacks.

I still remember the time I ate an entire bag of Toppo in one sitting—and immediately reached for another! Needless to say, I was too full to eat dinner that night. It’s dangerously addictive in the best way possible.

Alfort – Affordable Luxury from the Drugstore

Alfort is a bite-sized treat that combines a biscuit base with a layer of rich chocolate (sometimes milk, sometimes white, sometimes even matcha!).

I used to buy Alfort at Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a popular Japanese drugstore, where you can often find a pack for just 70–80 yen. I’d stock up on them and enjoy one or two (okay, maybe more) after dinner almost every night. It became a small daily ritual—and one that brought me a lot of comfort and joy.

DARS White – The Irresistible Creaminess of White Chocolate

DARS White is another favorite of mine, especially for its rich, milky flavor. Each piece is smooth, creamy, and melts in your mouth.

I’m a big fan of white chocolate in general, and DARS White is one of the best. If I ever got chocolate on Valentine’s Day, I’d definitely hope it was white chocolate. (Not that it happens often… 😢)

Whether you’re in Japan or just curious about Japanese snacks, I highly recommend giving these three a try. Not only are they delicious, but they also have a way of creating little moments of happiness in your everyday life—just like they did for me.
